FIS World Cup Downhill in Lake Louise

Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany won the gold in the World Cup downhill at Lake Louise, Canada with a time of 1:56:03 with .70 of a second ahead of Marianne Kaufmann ­Abderhalden of Switzerland taking second place. The third place was won by Elena Fanchini of Italy with +1.20 from the leader.

Lara Gut of Switzerland finishes at the 11th place in 1:57:79, +1.76 from the leader. Lindsey Vonn of the United State was cleared to get back on a World Cup circuit following a right knee injury as she gets ready for the Sochi Olympics. She did not have expectations from her first race and managed a 41rst place +3.19 from the leader.

The weather was sunny offering clear visibility but very cold with temperature varying between -28 and -30 Celsius (-18 to -22 Fahrenheit).

The next event will take place on Sunday at Lake Louise with the Super G. starting at 11:00 am local time.
