The Sahara desert is not your typical skiing or boarding destination but that has not stopped one determined entrepreneur from keeping a ski rental store open in the Nigerian sand dunes for the past 30 years. If the Alps can do it, why not Niger? However, tourists try sandboarding or skiing under the heat.
Sliding down a sand dune, surrounded by desert and possibly the odd passing camel is a surreal experience. It is much more sluggish than being on snow, is more difficult to turn and the runs are much shorter. It is a great buzz and a must-do for adventurous adrenaline seekers looking for something way out of the ordinary.
Other spots to hit the dunes include Monte Kaolino in Hirschau, Germany; Sand Master Park in Oregon, USA; Duna Grande in Ica, Peru; Tadoussac in Quebec, Canada; but also places in Naminia, France, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Egypt, Australia and South Africa.
