Launched in 2013, World Ski Awards aim is to drive up standards within the ski industry by rewarding the organisations that are leaders in their field. Ski tourism constitutes a vital segment in the global travel and tourism marketplace. An estimated 400 million skier visits took place in 2013 to the 2,000 ski resorts which are home to over 6 million hotel beds.
However, a much higher number of travel professionals rather than regular skiers, snowboarders and ski resort visitors across the globe vote for their favourite resorts, chalets and hotels in each of the world’s top 21 ski tourism nations, considering that there are 4482 resorts in 77 countries… This current process provides known, larger or more prestigious resorts an advantage on smaller ones, and might not be as independent and impartial as originally planned by organizers. Moreover, it is mentioned in the Voting Rules that: “An Industry vote carries a weighting of 5 times that of a Public vote.” which confirms that the voting system is not equal and accurate, unless votes are of the same value, or if the awards are separated into two categories, one from a professional vote and the other from the general public.
The 2014 World Ski Awards will take place over the weekend of 21st-23rd November at the A-ROSA Kitzbühel, Austria overlooking the legendary Hanhnenkamm, and the winners will be announced on the 22nd November 2014 as part of a 3 day programme of VIP events and networking activities.
